Volkswagen has addressed one of the biggest complaints about the VW Taos for 2025: replacing its seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with a traditional eight-speed automatic. That’s just the start of a series of updates designed to improve the subcompact SUV’s appeal.

Under the hood, the 1.5-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine gets a power boost. Along with the new transmission, Volkswagen promises smoother power delivery and a more refined driving experience, addressing the “herky-jerky” DSG behavior that held the Taos back in our previous small SUV mega comparison.

Volkswagen has also given the 2025 Taos a styling refresh, with revised front and rear bumpers, new wheel designs, and updated lighting elements for a more modern look.

Inside, the biggest upgrade comes in the form of Volkswagen’s latest infotainment system, featuring a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a larger 8.0-inch touchscreen with standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The top trim adds a 9.2-inch screen, gesture controls, and built-in navigation.

With more power, smoother shifts, and a more premium interior, the 2025 VW Taos could finally deliver on the promise it showed in our last comparison.
