105,000 Toyota Land Cruisers Recalled For Mystery Fuel Line Problem
Toyota is recalling 105,794 units of the 2024–2027 Land Cruiser Hybrid due to a fuel line defect that could cause fuel leaks and increase the risk of an engine fire.
According to recall documentation filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the connection between a resin fuel tube and the main metal fuel line near the fuel tank can separate if its retaining clip becomes unseated or lifted. If a disconnect occurs while driving, fuel will continue to spray out until the hybrid system shuts off the internal combustion engine, posing a fire hazard in the presence of an ignition source.
Toyota's internal investigation began in mid-2024 after receiving initial field reports of fuel leaks with lifted or missing retaining clips. Extensive production checks, supplier component testing, and plant CCTV reviews confirmed that parts met dimensional specifications and were correctly installed on the assembly line.
Further stress testing revealed that properly latched connectors will not separate—even under extreme vibration, elevated fuel pressure, high-speed water driving, or longitudinal pull tests that broke the connector housing before separating. Disconnections occurred only when retaining clips were unseated.
In static testing with an unseated connector, the fuel pump continued running, spraying out multiple gallons of fuel.
Despite extensive testing, Toyota noted it has not confirmed the precise root cause or mechanism that causes the retaining clips to lift in the field. However, to eliminate the safety risk, Toyota decided on October 8, 2026, to launch a voluntary safety recall. As of October 6, 2026, Toyota has identified 23 Field Technical Reports and 64 warranty claims in the U.S. related to the condition.
To fix the issue, Toyota dealers will inspect the fuel line connection. Technicians will install a supplemental retaining clamp free of charge. If the resin fuel tube is damaged, dealers will replace the tube assembly before installing the supplemental clamp.
Owner notification letters are scheduled to be mailed on November 29, 2026. Owners can contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331 using recall reference numbers 26TB23 and 26TA23.
