Another American V8 Dies

The Jeep Grand Cherokee L has lost its 5.7-liter Hemi V8, making the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 the only engine option available.

Jeep quietly phased out the V8 during the third quarter of 2024, mirroring similar changes seen in the Grand Cherokee, Wagoneer, and Grand Wagoneer models over the past few years. The V8 had been offered in higher trims like the Overland, Summit, and Summit Reserve.

Eliminating the V8 also impacts the Grand Cherokee L’s towing capability—the Hemi could tow up to 7,200 pounds, but the V6 is limited to 6,200 pounds. We can mourn all we want, but unfortunately, the V8 accounted for less than 4% of sales during the 2024 model year.

There may be further changes ahead for the Grand Cherokee L’s powertrain lineup. Rumors indicate the 3.6-liter V6 could be replaced by a turbocharged 2.0-liter Hurricane four-cylinder engine. Already available in the Wrangler, this smaller engine makes 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Electrification is another possibility, but for now, the Grand Cherokee L is expected to skip the 4xe plug-in hybrid setup used in the standard Grand Cherokee.
