It's been a long time coming, and Jaguar's new four-door saloon finally has a name.

They're calling it Type 01. It isn't exactly a massive leap from the Type 00 Concept nomenclature—and while it won't change the rhetoric surrounding Jaguar's rebirth, at least it's a step towards production.

What's in a name? Jaguar is hedging bets on its new, brand-defining four-door electric car, and the brand is naming its new beacon the Type 01. This new grand tourer is said to be the driving force (pun intended) behind Jag's next few years, both from a visual and performance perspective, so it better be good.

On paper at least, it's shaping up to be so.

986 horsepower and 958 lb-ft of torque will certainly help, and a fully fresh design language should also be, if nothing else, in its favor from a distinction point of view. That name, though, harkens back to the C-Type, E-Type, and other "-Type" Jags of yore, which certainly is a good reference point.

There's still a while to go before we get the full reveal this fall, and we very much look forward to seeing this new Type 01 when it comes to fruition. Hopefully, the new Jaguar resonates with new upscale buyers the brand craves because right now, JLR is on a path to standing for "Just Land Rover."
