Ford Just Recalled 42k Electric Mach-E Mustangs
Ford is issuing a safety recall for certain 2021 through 2023 model-year Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles equipped with a rear-wheel-drive configuration due to a mechanical defect in the final drive assembly.
According to documentation filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Mach-E's rear differential pinion shaft can experience bending fatigue failure, causing the shaft to fracture, resulting in an immediate loss of drive power. Additionally, with the shaft fractured, the transmission loses the ability to lock the vehicle in Park, creating a rollaway risk if the electronic parking brake is not manually engaged.
Production records show the affected component batch was introduced into vehicle assembly on February 27, 2021, and removed on August 21, 2025. As of June 11, 2026, Ford has logged 62 warranty claims and 14 global quality indicator reports related to the issue, though no accidents or injuries have been reported.
To resolve the defect, dealerships will inspect the rear drive unit and replace the rear differential assembly with a redesigned unit featuring a reinforced pinion shaft. Ford plans to distribute interim safety risk advisory notifications to affected owners via mail between July 13 and July 20, 2026.
Ford says the recall will not be fully deployed until late December 2026, meaning a secondary notification letter will be sent once parts become available at local dealers.
