With vehicle ownership cycles lengthening and the cost of living putting pressure on household budgets, how and where consumers choose to service their cars is shifting.

According to the newly released JD Power 2026 U.S. Aftermarket Service Index (ASI) Study, consumers are increasingly prioritizing affordability and convenience. While the quick oil change segment saw a 4-point increase in customer satisfaction this year, the more complex full-service maintenance and repair segment experienced a 7-point decline on a 1,000-point scale. This downward trend highlights the challenges aftermarket providers face as vehicles grow more complex and repair bills climb.

The Best Full-Service Maintenance and Repair Shops of 2026

The JD Power ASI study evaluates aftermarket service providers based on seven core factors: ease of scheduling, fairness of charges, service advisor courtesy, service advisor performance, service facility, time to complete service, and quality of work.

In the competitive Full-Service Maintenance and Repair segment, several brands distinguished themselves above the segment average of 809.

Key Takeaways for the Everyday Consumer

For drivers weighing whether to take their vehicle to an independent repair chain or back to the dealership, the 2026 index highlights several distinct trends in the aftermarket industry.

The Advantage of Speed

Convenience remains the strongest asset for aftermarket shops. While dealer visits for basic maintenance typically take longer due to dealership scale and scheduling constraints, aftermarket shops deliver on speed. A total of 49% of full-service aftermarket maintenance and repair customers had their work completed in less than an hour. Compare that to only 17% of dealership customers who experience same-day service turnaround times of under an hour. For consumers who cannot afford to leave their vehicle at a shop all day, aftermarket repair facilities continue to hold a significant time-saving edge.

Fixing it Right

Historically, aftermarket providers have fixed vehicles correctly the first time at rates above 95%. A figure that consistently outperforms franchise dealerships. Despite this strong operational performance, aftermarket shops still struggle with a perception gap. Many consumers continue to view dealerships as more technically capable of handling complex repairs and maintaining peak vehicle performance. In this study, full-service repair shops scored 6.07 out of 7 for trust in maintaining peak performance and 5.89 out of 7 for handling complex repairs, compared to dealer scores of 6.31 and 6.20, respectively.

Communication

How your service advisor communicates with you can dramatically alter your overall experience. The study emphasized that when an advisor is entirely focused on a customer’s needs, satisfaction scores remain high.

Furthermore, texting has officially surpassed phone calls as the preferred updates method for over half of all consumers. When service advisors match this preference, customer satisfaction scores average 854. Conversely, when a customer who prefers a text message receives a phone call instead, satisfaction drops to 840. The use of digital communication also facilitates the sending of multi-point inspection photos and videos, which significantly increases the likelihood that a customer will understand and approve recommended repairs.

AutoGuide's Take

When it comes to keeping an older vehicle on the road, aftermarket providers offer a fast and often more affordable alternative to traditional dealerships. If you are looking for a reliable shop for more than just an oil change or a tire rotation, sticking with top-ranked providers like Goodyear Auto Service and Tuffy Tire can give you the best odds of receiving high-quality work without sacrificing your afternoon.
