Friday Fun - Choose Your Front-Engine Retro Porsche
Welcome back to Choices. A series where seemingly similar cars are pit against one another in a battle for your affection.
It’s like trying to choose your favourite in-law. Your task, if you agree to accept it, is to determine which of the four cars would be your favorite. This week, we’re putting a spin on things as we ask you to pick your daily driver and your track day special out of the four options below.
The Contestants
- Porsche 924 Carrera GT
- Porsche 944 Turbo S
- Porsche 968
- Porsche 928 GTS
Today we are gathering ‘the other Porsche’s’ from the ’80s and ’90s. The cars that had to live in the shadow of their attention-grabbing sibling, the 911. But these cars were good cars in their own right; heck, some were fantastic. The cars in question are the 924, the 944, the 968, and the 928.
First up, there is the 924 Carrera GT. Equipped with the turbocharged engine pumped up to 210 hp, the Carrera GT featured wider bodywork as it was built for Group 4 racing homologation purposes. Next, there is the 1988 Porsche 944 Turbo S. With adjustable shocks, 247 hp and lighter wheels wearing grippier rubber, this was the ultimate road-going 944.
Moving on, we have the successor to the 944, the Porsche 968. Although there were some amazing 968 variants in Europe, like the Turbo S, we never got it on our shores. Still, the 3.0-liter four-cylinder made 237 hp and all the performance upgrades to match that power.
Finally, there is the Porsche 928. More a V8 Grand Tourer than a sports car, by the end of its model run, the 928 GTS had a 345 hp 5.4-liter V8 and all the luxurious interior appointments expected from a car like this.
My Choices
To start, I am going to pick my motorsport special. For this duty, I select the 924 Carrera GT for no other reason than that awesome widebody look. For my daily driver, the 928 GTS makes perfect sense with its torquey, smooth V8 and luxurious cabin. Yes, I’m aware of the potentially pricey repairs that await me, but I can’t resist that eight-cylinder growl.

I like the 968. Perfect balance. My dad had a cabrio in that blueish-green color and it was a blast.
They are all much nicer looking than the rear engine models.
