JD Power Says Lexus Initial Quality Is No Better Than A Nissan Now
Porsche claimed the top spot in JD Power's 2026 Initial Quality Study, ending Lexus' reign as the quality leader.
The German automaker recorded just 138 problems per 100 vehicles. Genesis placed second with 151 problems per 100 vehicles. Ford earned third place with 152 problems per 100 vehicles, making it the highest-ranked mass-market brand. Lexus dropped to fourth place with 156 problems per 100 vehicles, tied with Nissan.
Record Industry Improvement
The automotive industry posted its best year-over-year quality improvement in nearly three decades, according to JD Power. The study's average dropped from 192 problems per 100 vehicles last year to 175 this year.
"When technology becomes too complicated, the likelihood of customers experiencing a problem rises considerably," said Frank Hanley, senior director of auto benchmarking at JD Power.
Infotainment Systems Remain Problem Area
Infotainment was the only category where problems increased. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity issues were the largest single contributor to quality decline.
Distracted driving concerns surfaced in the data. Forty-six percent of respondents blamed displays and touchscreens for distraction-related problems. Eighteen percent cited driver assistance alerts as distractions.
Cupholders Drive Quality Gains
Cupholders delivered the biggest quality improvement. Buyers appreciated more accessible locations and larger capacities.
