Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana Vans To Go All Electric In 2026
Rumors suggest that the longstanding GMC Savana and Chevrolet Express vans will be replaced with a fully electric version, in 2026.
Initially reported by Autoweek, the GMC Savana and Chevrolet Express vans will be discontinued in 2025, and replaced by a ground-up, all-electric version on GM’s Ultium platform by 2026. That means, the basic design of GMC Savana, and Chevrolet Express will have been in production for more than 30 years. True, GM has updated the twins with new powertrain offerings over the years, but at its core, those vans aren’t that different from their introduction in 1996.
Autoweek thinks that the vans could be replaced by a vehicle similar to the Brightdrop Zevo 600 step van, albeit a lot smaller. The Zevo 600’s interior cargo room almost triples the Express and Savana’s poorly packaged, dated interior. In fact, the Express and Savana have lagged behind smarter designs like the Ram ProMaster, or Ford Transit, offering worse fuel economy, and less interior cargo room.
At the very least, expect the electric Savana and Express replacements to offer better EV range than other established competitors, like the Ford E-Transit. The E-Transit is essentially a regular Transit van, converted to electric, and thus its range isn’t so good. A brand new van on a dedicated EV platform will likely best vans that have been converted from gas to electric.
GM’s Brightdrop vans have started to make their way into delivery fleets, the first 150 vans have been delivered to FedEx, and will start service soon. We probably won’t know what the EV Savana and Express van will look like, for quite some time.
