Top 10 Most Expensive Cars to Crash
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has released a study for 2014-2016 passenger vehicles revealing the most expensive cars to crash.
By using collision claims data, IIHS and HLDI can give consumers an idea of how expensive it is to repair a particular vehicle following an accident. The data is broken down into three categories: claim frequency, claim severity, and overall losses. Claim frequencies are per 100 insured vehicle years, while claim severity is average loss payment per claim. The overall losses are average payments per insured vehicle year.

Not surprisingly, the most expensive cars to crash are also some of the most expensive cars available. But what many of these cars have in common are the performance they offer under the hood. To compare just how expensive these cars are to repair when they’re involved in a collision, the average claim frequency of all passenger vehicles for the study is 7.4, the average claim severity is $5,256, and the average overall losses is $390.
10. Maserati Ghibli
With a claim severity of $13,272, the Maserati Ghibli starts off the list at 10th place. Claim frequency is actually highest of all the cars in the top 10 at 10.1, while overall losses are $1,339.
9. BMW M4
Given the consumer group the BMW M4 targets, it’s not a stretch to see that its claim frequency is second highest on the list at 10.0. Claim severity rings in at $13,499 while overall losses are $1,349.

8. BMW M3
Not far off the mark is the BMW M4’s four-door counterpart, the BMW M3. Claim frequency is a bit lower at 8.0, but claim severity is higher at $16,866. Overall losses come in at $1,359.
7. Audi RS7
The sole Audi on the list is also one of its most expensive, high-performance offerings. The Audi RS7 comes in seventh with a claim frequency of 8.7, claim severity of $16,013, and overall losses of $1,401.
6. BMW M6
Yet another M vehicle on the list is the more expensive BMW M6. Claim frequency totals 8.6, while claim severity is highest among the M cars at $17,436. Overall losses of $1,498 land the BMW M6 in sixth place.
5. Maserati GranTurismo
Another Maserati model makes it onto the list in the form of the GranTurismo. The luxury sports coupe has a claim frequency of 8.5 and each claim isn’t cheap with claim severity reported at $18,785. Overall losses for the GranTurismo totals $1,597.
4. BMW i8
It isn’t an M model that’s the most expensive BMW to crash, but rather it’s the BMW i8 hybrid sports coupe. Claim frequency is 7.7, while claim severity is $21,588 which isn’t too surprising considering the price tag on the BMW i8, along with the technology and components used on the car. Overall losses for the i8 is $1,657.
3. Bentley Continental GTC
But it isn’t any of the German or Italian automakers that are the most expensive cars to crash. That honor goes to the U.K. with Bentley taking the top three spots. Kicking off the top three of Bentleys is the Continental GT Convertible with a claim frequency of 6.5. Claim severity totals $29,478 and overall losses are $1,923.
2. Bentley Continental Flying Spur
The four-door version of the Continental, called the Flying Spur, is second on the list with a claim frequency of 8.1 and overall losses of $2,338. Claim severity is actually lower than the Continental GTC at $28,816.
1. Bentley Continental GT
The most expensive car to crash according to IIHS and HLDI data is the Bentley Continental GT. Claim frequency for the luxury coupe is 7.1, while claim severity is a $35,744, which is around the price of an average car sold in the U.S. Overall losses on the Bentley Continental GT is $2,536.

For sure the most expensive cars to crash are exotic cars, even number 1 on this list would be no where close to how expensive it would be to crash a Bugatti Chiron.
