These Are The Coupes People Can't Stop Loving
The more things change, the more they stay the same. Last month, there were three new entries in our list of the most-researched coupes in America. This month, there’s one new model and only minor changes in the finishing order.

10. Toyota GR86
Last month, Toyota’s sporty GR 86 coupe found itself in eighth spot on the list of the most-researched coupes. It drops into the 10th and final slot on this latest list, but at least it’s still hanging on. For what it’s worth, the Subaru BRZ that’s mechanically related to the Toyota GR 86 didn’t crack into the top 10.
9. Lexus LC 500
After a one-month hiatus, the stunning Lexus LC 500 returns to the list of the most-researched coupes in September. Of course, it’s also offered in convertible form, but either way the LC’s highlights include beautiful styling, luxurious accouterments and a positively perfect 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine.
8. Porsche 911
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. The Porsche 911 is the quintessential European sports car, and even if any physics professor would tell you its engine is mounted in the wrong place for optimal weight balance and therefore at-the-limit handling on a race track, the fact is that the 911 just plain works.
7. Audi A5
This one is a bit fuzzy. And by fuzzy what we really mean is that the Audi A5 isn’t a coupe. After multiple generations of two-door A5 models, the latest version of this swoopy German luxury car is sold solely in four-door form. The current A5 does look kinda sorta coupe-like, with nicely raked rear pillars and glass, but if you want an actual coupe that fits the traditional two-door mold, you’ll have to look elsewhere.
6. BMW 2 Series
If Audi’s deletion of coupes from its modern lineup has you down, perhaps you should check out longtime rival BMW instead. The 2 Series is the first of two traditional coupes from BMW on this list – note that there’s also a four-door 2 Series that’s based on a completely different platform – and it is also one with a classic front-engine, rear-wheel-drive design. In its M240 or M2 guises, it accelerates like a muscle car and handles like a sports car. What’s not to like?
5. Nissan Z
The Nissan Z is one of only a few remaining reasonably priced two-door sports cars in America. It’s powered by a lovely 400-horsepower V6 engine, boasts a stiff chassis and a rear-wheel-drive platform, and it can even be ordered with a traditional six-speed manual transmission. Of course, an automatic is also on the options list for those who don’t want to row their own, but we think the Z is best experienced in its truest shift-for-yourself form.
4. BMW 4 Series
The second traditional two-door coupe from BMW on the list, the 4 Series stands out as an excellent option for buyers interested in making a classic personal luxury statement. The BMW 4 Series lineup also includes a four-door fastback and a convertible, and the pair of two-door models come with either a turbocharged four-cylinder in 430i form, or for those who prefer a bit more power and don’t mind its comically large grille, with a turbocharged inline-six in M-badged form.
3. Chevrolet Corvette
The Chevrolet Corvette was a new entry to the list last month, and it remains in third place for the second month in a row in September. It is quite possibly the best dollar-for-dollar performance bargain in the world, and considering how long it’s been on the market – it first appeared for the 1953 model year – we’re not surprised it gets so much interest from online researchers.
2. Dodge Charger
The Dodge Charger is another fuzzy one. But unlike the Audi A5 that doesn’t truly belong on this list (regardless of what the marketing may say), Dodge heard the public outcry for a proper two-door Charger coupe and has reintroduced its Charger in the classic body style. Dodge also heard all those rallying cries for gasoline engines to return to the Charger lineup, and the car is now offered in both EV and inline-six forms.
1. Ford Mustang
The Ford Mustang has sat atop this list of the most-researched coupes in America for as long as we’ve been putting it together. The Camaro and Challenger may have faded away, but Ford refuses to give up, regardless of its slowly eroding sales figures, on its iconic and muscular pony car.
