These Are 2025's Least Reliable Car Brands
Volkswagen sells the least reliable cars in America, according to the J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS).
J.D. Power surveyed 34,175 original owners of 2022 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership, and their individual complaints were tallied to create these rankings. It’s noteworthy that J.D. Power’s VDS rankings don’t account for the severity of the complaint. In other words, while troubles connecting a smartphone may be irritating, they aren’t as serious as blown engines that leave owners stranded.
Regardless, each complaint counts equally toward the number of problems reported, and smartphone integration woes accounted for half of the top 10 most reported problems overall. Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) garnered the most complaints by vehicle type, followed by diesel-powered vehicles and electric vehicles. Hybrids (those without plugs) had the least number of problems in the VDS.
The average across all brands of 202 PP100 was up from 190 in 2024 and 186 in 2023. The most common complaints in the VDS were directed toward Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
