The Pontiac Pegasus was built on the chassis of a 1970 Pontiac Firebird, but heavily modified. The 4-wheel disc brakes were from a Corvette, and the exhaust system, mufflers and instrument panel gauges were from Ferrari.

Ferrari contributed a 365 GTB/4 V12 engine from the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 “Daytona.” The Italian V12 engine made around 352 hp and was mated to a Ferrari 5-speed transmission and a GM posi-traction rear axle.

The Pegasus featured a long hood, short deck proportions, and distinct styling cues like Ferrari-style fender vents, and wire wheels.

It had a luxurious, European-style interior with a wood-rimmed steering wheel, plush upholstery, and bespoke details. Ferrari-spec Veglia Borletti gauges were used, and a wood-trimmed center console houses the Ferrari shifter.

The body was completely reworked by Pininfarina in Italy, giving it a sleek, European Gran Turismo look—more Ferrari than Firebird. Some of the design cues found their way into future Firebird models.

The design was originally sketched with the goal of freshening up the Camaro.
