Mercedes Shows What Happens When Grand Touring Meets Formula 1

The brand has revealed the Mercedes-AMG GT2 Edition W16, a track-only machine billed as its most powerful customer car to date, with technology directly inspired by the top tier of motorsport.

Built on the foundation of the AMG GT2 that debuted in 2022, the Edition W16 isn’t tied to any particular racing series.

That freedom allowed engineers to push the car beyond traditional homologation limits. Under the hood sits the familiar 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, now tuned to deliver up to 818 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque.

A new Push2Pass system injects an additional 98 hp and 148 lb-ft for short bursts, achieved by temporarily increasing turbo boost pressure. Power is routed to the rear wheels through a six-speed sequential gearbox with revised ratios, helping the car hit a top speed of over 199 mph while weighing in at just 3,153 pounds.

The Edition W16 isn’t just about brute force. It benefits from a host of aero tweaks honed on Formula 1 tracks, including active louvers above the front wheels, a deeper diffuser, new mirrors, and a carbon fiber rear wing integrated into the trunk lid.

The car also features a Drag Reduction System (DRS), mirroring the system used in F1, to help achieve its top speed on long straights. Magnesium wheels round out the lightweight package.

Production is capped at 30 units worldwide, with each car priced at €679,000 before taxes—roughly $791,000 USD.

Buyers will receive their GT2 Edition W16 at a European race track during a special handover event, complete with AMG-branded extras like a car cover and a personalized racing suit.

With its mix of F1-derived technology and unshackled engineering, the GT2 Edition W16 underscores AMG’s strategy of using motorsport not just as a proving ground, but as a direct link to its most passionate customers.
