5 Vehicles Begging For A 5.7L HEMI V8
With the announcement of the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine returning to the Ram 1500 pickup truck this year, it got us thinking. Where else could this iconic Stellantis eight-cylinder engine wind-up? It’s currently still used in the Dodge Durango, but outside of that and the impending Ram 1500 application, it’s found nowhere else.
Below we have five possible homes for the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 over the coming years. Some are obvious choices, while others are a bit more out there.
Jeep Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer
As a platform mate to the Ram 1500, and a former application of the 5.7-liter HEMI, a return to the full-size body-on-frame Jeep Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer makes a ton of sense. Although it currently uses the turbocharged inline-6 Hurricane that makes more than enough power, some customers just prefer the sound and simplicity of the good old pushrod V8.
Dodge Charger
The next obvious choice for the returning V8 is the all-new Dodge Charger. Although the car currently is only sold as the all-electric Charger Daytona, the Charger Six-Pack is on the way, utilizing the turbocharged inline-6 Hurricane engine. Much like the Wagoneer, there are plenty of customers that would trade in a bit of power and efficiency of the six-cylinder engine for the sound and fury of the V8.
Jeep Grand Cherokee
Notice a theme here? The first three possibilities we’ve listed are all nameplates that previously used the HEMI V8 in some form. But unlike the first two entries, the Grand Cherokee does not offer the turbocharged inline-6 engine. It currently has the regular 3.6-liter V6, or the plug-in hybrid 4Xe set-up. The HEMI V8 would slot nicely between the two current power-plants in terms of power and price, making this potentially the most obvious choice.
Upcoming RAM Mid-size Truck
Now we get into the more speculative entries. RAM has announced a smaller pickup truck is on the way, most likely set to battle the likes of the Ford Ranger, Chevrolet Colorado, Toyota Tacoma, and Nissan Frontier. These trucks use a variety of four- and six-cylinder engines, with turbochargers and hybrids included here and there. Why not give the new RAM truck something unique in the segment, like a HEMI V8? The Dakota R/T offered one even when the competition did not, so why not continue tradition. It just feels like a move RAM would make.
Jeep Gladiator
Our final suggestion is a vehicle that never had the HEMI V8 in the past but would make sense to gain one. The Jeep Gladiator is not a typical mid-size pickup truck. It’s essentially a Jeep Wrangler 4-Door with a truck bed grafted on the back. Currently it uses the 3.6-liter V6 with the 4Xe powertrain on its way. We think having a top-end model with a snarly 5.7-liter V8 would be cool and do a lot for the image of the truck. WE'll take one Mojave V8 please. Become an AutoGuide insider.
