2027 Slate Truck: All The Details
Startup automaker Slate Auto has officially unveiled its first product, simply called the Truck. The minimalist electric pickup is turning heads not just for its compact design and back-to-basics ethos, but for its eye-popping target price of $20,000—after federal tax credits.

Slate’s small EV pickup will launch in a single, no-frills configuration: a two-door, two-seat cab finished in the company’s namesake gray.
The exterior panels are molded composite plastic for durability, and cost-saving touches include mirrored taillights and identical interior/exterior door handles.
Underneath, the Truck features a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 201 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.
The standard 52.7-kWh battery delivers an estimated 150 miles of range, while an optional 84.3-kWh battery ups that to 240 miles.
That includes body wraps, lift kits, and even a bed cap and seat kit that convert it into a five-passenger SUV.
Slate says these add-ons can be DIY or installed at service centers and that much of the vehicle’s ecosystem will be open-source, enabling third-party accessories.
Measuring 174.6 inches long, the Truck is shorter than a Honda Civic and far more compact than the Ford Maverick.
Inside, you’ll find manual HVAC knobs, cloth seats, crank windows, and no dedicated infotainment system.
There's a smartphone mount and optional speakers—though Slate says you can just plop a Bluetooth speaker on the dash if you’d prefer.
Despite its budget approach, safety isn’t ignored: automatic emergency braking and forward-collision warning come standard.
Slate plans to skip the traditional dealership network and sell directly to buyers, with service handled through local hubs.
With federal incentives potentially phasing out and the complexity of launching a new vehicle from scratch, Slate faces significant hurdles.
